Pemba Island

Overview

Pemba Island, part of the Zanzibar Archipelago, lies north of Unguja (Zanzibar Island) and is often referred to as the “Green Island” due to its lush vegetation, fertile soils, and scenic hills. Less developed and less touristy than Unguja, Pemba offers a serene and authentic experience of coastal East Africa, making it a haven for travelers seeking tranquility, pristine beaches, and rich cultural heritage. The island’s economy is largely based on agriculture, especially clove plantations, alongside fishing and small-scale tourism.

Places to Visit

  1. Chake-Chake – The main town on Pemba, known for its vibrant market, historical ruins, and charming seaside promenade.

  2. Ngezi Forest Reserve – A protected area covering lush tropical forest and home to endemic wildlife species, including rare birds and monkeys.

  3. Misali Island – A small, uninhabited island off Pemba’s west coast, famous for crystal-clear waters, coral reefs, and excellent snorkeling opportunities.

  4. Vumawimbi Beach – A stunning, quiet beach with powdery white sand and turquoise waters, ideal for relaxing and swimming.

  5. Matemwe and Chwaka Bay – Beautiful coastal areas where visitors can explore mangroves, local villages, and marine life.

Activities

  • Snorkeling and Diving – Pemba is surrounded by vibrant coral reefs teeming with tropical fish, turtles, and sometimes dolphins. Misali Island is particularly popular for underwater exploration.

  • Spice Tours – Explore clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg plantations, learning about traditional farming and the island’s spice heritage.

  • Hiking and Nature Walks – Discover Pemba’s lush interior, including the hills, forests, and agricultural landscapes.

  • Fishing Excursions – Join local fishermen or organized tours for deep-sea or traditional dhow fishing experiences.

  • Cultural Visits – Engage with local villages, markets, and historical sites to understand Pemba’s rich Swahili culture and traditions.

  • Beach Relaxation – With fewer crowds than Unguja, Pemba offers pristine beaches for swimming, sunbathing, or simply enjoying the tranquil island atmosphere.

The best time to visit Pemba Island is during the dry seasons, when the weather is sunny, beaches are inviting, and outdoor activities are most enjoyable.

  • June to October – The long dry season offers warm, pleasant temperatures, calm seas, and excellent conditions for snorkeling, diving, and beach activities.
  • January to February – The short dry season is another ideal period, with minimal rainfall and clear skies, perfect for exploring the island’s forests, spice farms, and villages.

The rainy seasons March to May (long rains) and November to December (short rains) bring heavy showers, which can make some roads slippery and certain outdoor activities more challenging. However, the island remains green and vibrant, and diving and snorkeling can still be rewarding during breaks in the rain.

For a comfortable and memorable visit, it’s best to plan your trip around the dry months, when Pemba’s natural beauty and tranquil beaches can be fully enjoyed.
